the history of moosewood
An excerpt from A History of Indian Point, Compiled by Sereno Sewall Webster, Jr.
Written by Muriel Soule: “Georgetown Associates sold Annie Sturgis her lot in 1929, though this deed was not recorded until 1951, when Annie deeded the land and log cabin to her daughter, Muriel Soule. The Sturgis log cabin on Sea Beach was built in 1929 and 1930 by the Hildreths of Boothbay Harbor, who also built Sprucewold Inn, a large log hotel in Boothbay Harbor. The spruce logs were rafted down the Kennebec River from northern forests.
Annie Sturgis, mother of six, designed the cabin with its cathedral ceiling and balcony. There are 5 bedrooms so there is space for all. It is called “Moosewood” as a huge moose head shot at Lily Bay by Ira Sturgis, Muriel’s grandfather in 1870 is the centerpiece. The moose head was called Abraham. The cabin has a white quartz fireplace made from Indian Point quartz.
As there were no other cottages in the area at that time, the Sturgis girls used to run down to the beach without bathing suits for a swim and sunbathing - those were the good old days! Mrs. Sturgis had the distinction of swimming to the Promontory and back to the middle of the beach. Margaret Sturgis was swept off the promontory while taking photographs during a hurricane. She landed fortunately in a rocky chasm, bruised but still holding her camera.”
